This is an almost unknown musical on the amateur circuit, yet very well known in the professional world, and appreciated for the great musical that it is. Whether the title just does not ring is a possibility, and could be a problem with box office sales, yet see it and you will be sold on its attributes. Premiered on Broadway in 1963 it had a long run and 5 Tony Award nominations.
I like this romantic show, and saw it when on in Chichester. Concept brought life to this musical with their outstanding Musical Director Chris Fossey giving the score pizzazz and scintillating choreography from Adam Pitt. The moment we stepped into the theatre the set hit us with style and class from the masters of design Paul Buckle and Ruairidh MacLeod Lyon and exceptional lighting.
Every character was played with skill and authenticity. What an amazing cast! Ellie Hoare as Amalia Balash lived this character giving an excellent performance, with great interaction. Richard Thomas as Ladislav Sipos gave a brilliant performance and Stephen Hopkins as Mr Maraczek was strong in this role, giving a rich rendition of the moving “Days Gone By”. Fabulous true to era scenes were created.
Congratulations to Director Laura McMahon and all the cast and team and thank you Concept for bringing this ‘new’ musical to the stage.
